Music in Ancient Greece was a very important element in religion, culture, theatre and philosophy. We will look at the musical instruments and the music that the Ancient Greeks played.

A look at a huge chunk of English history that is relatively unknown to most people, yet it accounts for almost a third of England's recorded history from the arrival of the Romans.   We cover the period from 410 AD, the Roman departure, to 1066 AD the arrival of the Normans. Along the way we encounter saints and sinners, blood-thirsty Vikings, and lots of kings called Ethel! 

Calling all artists and would be artists. Practice makes artists of us all. Inspire motivate and surprise yourself in a relaxed self-supporting group, drawing and painting. You need to supply your own materials - just paper and pencil can start you off. Collaborate and learn from others, use books/internet. Work on new, existing or aspirational projects - definite improvement on working solo. Very rewarding.

Self-directed Art Group in a supportive and relaxed environment that meets fortnightly throughout the year. Members can do drawing watercolour pen and wash pastels and charcoal. Come along, sit back, relax and enjoy the refreshments while you are entertained with balladry - much of it in a light-hearted mode. The fun will include some of the old time classics from Banjo Paterson, Henry Lawson and C J Dennis, together with some of the presenter's slightly-naughty humorous verse.

Expected proficiency: playing standard rubber bridge based on knowledge and experience acquired through U3A Beginners or Intermediate Bridge courses and several years of playing rubber bridge socially. Class does not break for school holidays.

Learn how to play bridge using Standard 5 card major/better minor bidding system. Knowledge and experience playing cards would help. Participants proceed through a series of graduated lessons in bridge basics, bidding, card play and bridge conventions. After 5 weeks all should be able to play bridge and proceed to more complex aspects of the game. NOTE: Class breaks for school holidays.

Walks are in National, Conservation, Hills and Linear Parks within 30mins of the CBD. Moderate walking speed and fitness are necessary. Walks are planned for 2 hour duration, but this cannot always be guaranteed so plan accordingly. The programme considers likely weather conditions and is cancelled if the forecast is 32 degrees or above. Please do not enrol unless committing to a majority of walks. An ongoing course in Chinese language and culture for students with some background in the subject. Some use is made of a textbook and workbooks. A print or electronic dictionary is necessary. This class observes school holidays.

Gentle stimulating workout of body, mind and spirit to a variety of traditional and contemporary tunes from around the world, with an open friendly fun-loving group. All dances carefully taught and each session is a unique collection of dances from a world-wide network. Beginners and returning participants welcome. NB: Students must be able to stand & move unaided and be medically capable of participating in a dance class with gentle to moderately vigorous exercise. Note: We do break for school holidays.

With climate change now an accepted fact, a number of presenters, probably 3, will update various proposed actions and their feasibility. Some of the likely options include, the economics of nuclear power. Other discussion topics are; are we living beyond our means?, our ecological and carbon footprints, climate change as a symptom. The speakers are from the U3A Online course.

Are you a capable computer user but have a suspicion that you are missing useful skills? These Zoom workshops are to learn particular skills for personal efficiency and productivity - creating a website, managing everything with Notes, shared calendars, organising and printing images, managing emails and so on. Zoom provides intimate demonstration and practice, and there is homework! Note: please ignore dates/times listed, they are only there as the computer requires those fields to be filled.  Actual times will be negotiated with the tutor.

Be inspired by contemporary art through practical assignments designed to spark your creativity. A series of artistic tasks are set to be undertaken at home, using simple materials including acrylic paints, scrap paper and found objects. Suitable for people who enjoy making things and accessing their creative flow. Class breaks for school holidays. Reading poetry is one of the best ways of paying close attention to language and how it works. We are living through a 'golden age' in Australian poetry as the diversity of talented voices has never been more on display. The course aims to discuss 2-3 poems each session chosen by the tutor and showcasing the variety and vitality of contemporary Australian poetry. Copies of poems will be provided. View a film in the afternoon of the second Tuesday of the month usually at the Palace Nova East End Cinema. Coffee and discussion at nearby premises follow. Check your email or phone U3A office on the previous Thursday to get the details of the film time and location. Pay at the cinema.

Many who have done the original Slices of Apple have wanted to dig deeper into the Apple environment. So that is what this 4 week course is all about. It will look at the more complex topics of writing and presenting with the range of Apple tools.

A look at the man who has been called the most loathed king of England, the Prince Regent later to become George IV. He was extravagant, indolent, and basically a complete waste of space. Then he married the outrageous Princess Caroline of Brunswick. The marriage was a total disaster from the wedding day onwards, but they were stuck with "'til death us do part", and had to live for 25 years in very public disharmony.

Another tale of royal marital woe. Edward VIII, later Duke of Windsor, and his beloved Wallis Simpson.  Totally smitten at first sight on his side, maybe not so much on her side. The marriage nearly caused a constitutional crisis, and their conduct throughout the 1930s and the war years disgusted the nation and the empire (as it then was).

Presenters will deliver topics such as "Musicians Who Died Last Year", "War and Peace" (but not as you know it), "Step by Step" (which invites you to come for a walk), musical identities from the Waltz Kings to Roy Orbison to Rod Stewart, and a quiz to test your knowledge of songs from the movies.  Full program details are available on the website . In their own time each month members will watch a nominated film from free to air TV such as SBS On Demand. They then meet on Zoom to discuss the film. Members take turns to choose the monthly film. We do not break for school holidays.

For students with two or three years of French study. The course is not designed for complete beginners. We would aim to achieve competence in comprehension and conversation to the level of 'good French for travellers'. Our textbook will be "French Conversation" by Eliane Kurbegov (McGraw Hill). Three years of previous French study are required. Classes will be conducted in both French and English so some fluency is necessary. Regular activities include all skills: conversation, reading, listening, translating, dictation and revision of basic grammar. We aim to build on what was covered in the Basic French course. Some familiarity with the basics of French grammar and vocabulary is required. Speaking in French is encouraged! A class for students who have a good command of French but wish to consolidate and further improve their skills. This course is aimed at complete beginners. It will be at a gentle pace and in a relaxed atmosphere. Initially it will only be for the first term (to end of April), but may possibly be extended depending on the tutor's commitments. 

This course is devised for those with some basic knowledge of the language and a desire to use it where it will be most useful (ie in France). Mostly we just need the courage or bravado to speak to a French person in their own language. We'll use the familiar language of travelling as a start. There will be lots of input from you and nous nous amuserons bien.

A themed guided tour on the 1st Tuesday of each month will focus on less familiar works, new insights into popular works, or special exhibitions. PLEASE NOTE: The Art Gallery operates on the basis of groups not individuals. Enrolment at the beginning of the year is for a full year with a fee (it was $20 in 2024 but the Gallery has not confirmed 2025 charges as at November 2024). This fee is collected by U3A Adelaide which then pays the AGSA. It will reduce proportionately if you commence in Term 2 or Term 3. The year 2025 will include two Ticketed Entry sessions which members pay separately to the Gallery. There is no Gallery Guide fee for these sessions. In class we speak German on many topics. Every member is asked to present a topic for discussion 2-3 times per year. This has been a splendid way of increasing the word power of presenters and listeners as well as giving everyone a chance to discuss and explore new and interesting issues, some prepared, others unprepared. What makes an artwork "great"? In each session we explore an example from the art history canon. Artists we look at include Renoir, Picasso, Rodin, Manet, Van Gogh, Vermeer, Sander, Klimt, Pollock. A slide presentation will stimulate lively group discussion as together we explore art's meaning and influence. We break for school holidays. Learn competitive Hand & Foot Canasta to keep your brain active. Once you understand the rules you become a keen player in a friendly group. Some people stay for 3 hours with a coffee break, others choose to leave after 2 hours. Note: the group takes school holidays. 

In their own time participants watch a nominated episode of the SBS program “Insight” and discuss it at the Zoom meeting held at 9am on the second and fourth Thursday of the month.

Aimed at complete beginners in Italian, but prior knowledge of another Romance language is advantageous. We will concentrate on pronunciation and basic grammar, with references to Italian culture. Materials will be supplied. We will break for school holidays. 

Class members will be encouraged to share news orally, to undertake a little grammar and read from an agreed reader. Students will need to buy the agreed chosen text. Note: class breaks for school holidays.

A course moving on from complete beginners. Focus will be on building vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and simple conversation. Textbook needed: 'BBC Italian Grammar'. Available from Book Depository and Booktopia (online). It is the book with the green cover - there is a later version (red cover) and although I don't know for sure I don't think the content would have changed dramatically. A verb book is also handy. We have conversational chats about various topics in Italian. A good grasp of the language is required. Note: the class does not break for school holidays.

An advanced level of fluency in Italian language is needed as a prerequisite to discuss topics. Topics covered will include Italian culture, history, literature and current affairs. This Italian class is aimed at complete beginners and will provide an introduction to a language considered melodic. The course will commence with the basics, increasing knowledge step by step. It will cover Italian pronunciation, common phrases and an introduction to grammar.

Aimed at those with some prior knowledge of Latin. Must have a nodding acquaintance with grammar up to 3rd declension nouns and adjectives and present, future and past tenses of verb conjugations. We study grammar, practice translation Latin to English and vice versa and read simple Latin stories.  NOTE: Course for one term only at this stage as tutor may be travelling May-June.

If you would like to learn a little Latin and read about life in Roman times try this course. All learning materials are provided but you will need to buy a reader: Cambridge Latin Course Book 1 4th edition and have access to the internet. No prerequisites are required.

This workshop is for those with a reasonable knowledge of Latin grammar. Total expertise not expected! The class will be a mix of activities: grammar concepts and exercises, readings to extend vocabulary and exploration of Roman culture and literature. texts are listed on the website. We share knowledge on and discuss topical social and political issues using reports from reputable local, interstate and overseas sources, radio, TV broadcasts, video, internet etc. We try to better understand our society and its problems and encourage all to contribute and participate. At each meeting we agree on topic(s) for discussion for the following meeting. Class does not break for school holidays.

The remarkable story of how the presenter became one of Australia's top intelligence officers. He will tell of his time working with British Intelligence Agencies in London, his assignment to war-ravaged Somalia and his role in uncovering a secret biological weapons program in Iraq. At times he worked with, and for, the CIA where his life was at risk. He has written a book which will be available if anyone wishes to purchase it.

If you are curious about how to write your life-story, or that of someone close, this is for you. You will try out practical writing strategies to get you started and consider structures and ideas to keep you motivated. It will be a safe space and sharing writing is voluntary.

The tutor chooses a session of a live theatre production, usually a matinee. Members book their own tickets and advise the tutor when they have done so. Immediately after seeing the production members meet nearby for discussion over drinks and/or a meal. Members are not obliged to attend all performances. With its French and Spanish origins, its Cajun and Creole cultures, and its Mississippi Delta bayou country, Louisiana developed its own unique musical heritage. It was arguably "the cradle of American music". Here, with a focus on Cajun "folk" and Zydeko "swamp blues", songs from and about Louisiana. 

Members meet fortnightly to play the original Chinese game using Eastern rules. Existing players will help newcomers learn on the run. No formal lessons will be conducted. Please bring a Mah Jong set if possible. Note: class does not break for school holidays.

We will continue with 'explorations' of various composers, in each case watching a video about the composer and following that with a selection of works by them and some contemporaries.  Composers will be treated in a more or less chronological order and, having covered the baroque and classical eras last year, we will start with Beethoven in 2025. Since the 1940s, using increasingly sophisticated cinematic techniques, documentary film makers have told us stories that have shaped our understanding of the natural world and its wild inhabitants. Each week, the class will view a nature documentary, and then will discuss its particular narrative about nature. 

In their own time members watch a selected Netflix film each month and meet on the 2nd Monday of the month at 9.00am via Zoom to discuss it. Films are chosen by the members. We do not break for school holidays.

German movie of 2018, internationally acclaimed and nominated for many awards. A young artist is studying at the art school in Dresden and falls in love with another young student, unaware that she is the daughter of the Nazi era doctor who had been responsible for his aunt's death.  We will have an intermission for people to stretch their legs or move their cars.

The group will attend scheduled performances in the Palace Nova Opera and Ballet series at the Prospect Cinema, 98 Prospect Road, Prospect .During the interval the group will meet to discuss the performance. A look at our showcase of places from all around England. We will have a video presentation highlighting some of the famous and not so famous places that we visited over the years. These include grand houses, wonderful gardens and much more.

A multi award winning Danish film from 1987. It won the Palme d'Or and the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Set in the 1850s, it is the story of an elderly Swedish widower, Lasse, and his young son, Pelle, who move from Sweden to Denmark for a better life. Due to his age, and prejudice against foreigners, Lasse finds it difficult to gain employment and they are forced to work on a large farm under a tyrannical manager.   We will have an intermssion for people to stretch their legs or move their cars.

Alexander the Great's father is often portrayed as a man whose only great act was to be assassinated to allow Alexander to come to power. In fact Philip II was an inspirational and successful general, a charismatic leader and a skilled negotiator. He transformed a kingdom weakened by a succession of weak kings into the basis of an empire that his son could build on. As much as his son, he changed history.

Interactive Philosophy Group's aim is to present discussions about philosophy. Meetings deal with topics of relevance comprising a presentation by a speaker followed by a period of open discussion. While there are no prerequisites members are urged to participate in the discussion and where possible to give a presentation to the group. 

We will look at a group of photographers and their work.  We will see how their work was executed, and how the medium is used in so many ways; from black and white to colour, from mountains to cities, from heartbreak to exploitation. 

The group chooses the plays to read from 120 or so titles available in sets. Writers range from Albee to Wilde from Beckett to Webster. Parts are allocated with everyone reading each week and some time spent discussing background and insights.

A fortnightly book is selected by the group. We encourage members to do an author biography reviews or questions followed by discussion on the book. There are no pre-requisites, just a love of reading. The class does not break for school holidays.

Our poetry selections are made around themes. We tend not to analyse poems but to read them for the enjoyment of ideas and language. We read for pleasure! The first session is always free choice, so come along with your favourites. Note: class does not break for school holidays.

Quadrivium can be described as centuries of learning made simple. When a child asks "What star is that?" or "Can you help play my favourite song?" they need more than the internet. Quadrivium  provides simple real-life paper and pen magic you can pass on to the next generation without expensive gear or technical expertise. This is an informal course with plenty of back-up resources if you miss sessions.

Members read one book each month and meet to discuss. Meetings are at the Arab Steed Hotel 241 Hutt Street. It is conveniently close to the Box Factory and a quiet environment. Although not obligatory, some members choose to have a cuppa, other drink or a meal. We do not break for school holidays.

Cross Sweden from east to west in the iconic canal boat M/S Diana, crossing 8 lakes, 2 seas and 3 canals with 66 locks. Then travel on the historic ice-breaker M/S Fram from Svalbard Norway to the World Heritage city of Bergen.  

A group who read and discuss Shakespeare's plays. We also watch DVDs of the plays and consider how they are interpreted and the different ways in which the characters are presented. A beginner course requiring no previous knowledge of Spanish, The course will use a communicative approach aimed at basic language acquisition for everyday conversation. Other aspects of language learning will be addressed as required. A relaxed atmosphere created to encourage communication and fun while learning. No textbook required, only pen and paper. We study novels and text material supplied by class members, dealing with Hispanic culture and history. We improve our (intermediate level) vocabulary and grammar via exercises in a cooperative interactive class. We aspire to improve our conversational skills via discussion. A 1993 film, winner of several international awards but banned in China.  The story of a boy growing up in  China in the 1950s and 60s. The brutal political and cultural campaigns launched by the government during this time have a profound impact on his family. We will have an intermission for people to stretch their legs or move their cars.

Global heating will affect everyone. How will we live comfortably without damaging the environment? We explore global heating broadly, changes we can expect, and the problems of dealing with these. Some members have knowledge to share, but all can raise questions and learn. We welcome everyone.

An illustrated talk on The Outer Hebrides of Scotland. A look at the history of the area, in particular the island of Eriskay. We will also look at some of the many tourist highlights of the area. The presenter has a family connection to the area and has made two visits to the islands.

An Oscar winning romantic comedy drama starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara.  Sean Thornton, a retired boxer, travels to his hometown in Ireland to reclaim his family farm.  But once  there, he falls in love with the fiery Mary, sister of a local bully.  We will have an intermssion during the movie for people to stretch their legs or move their cars.

A variety of activities to exercise the brain, including memory, words and numbers, problem solving and some light exercise to refresh the blood circulation. The emphasis is on "give it a go" rather than "I can't do it". It is not competitive but about socialising and stretching the mind.

A self managed class following on from the previous beginners course in watercolour. We will continue to develop all the essential techniques incrementally and apply them in weekly masterpieces! This class is for those ready to commit to learning the wonders of watercolour. Note: We break for school holidays.

The aim is to create a supportive inclusive atmosphere to stimulate joy and freedom in artmaking and a renewed sense of creativity and agency in art practice; to provide opportunities to explore various watercolour techniques styles and genres; to practise brush precision & colour mixing and learn basic principles of composition & linear perspective.

Have you ever wondered why or how birds live? We will try to enlighten you with some recent research, bird distribution and behaviour, using lectures and visual displays. There will also be some humour, bird war heroes, and strange behaviours.

For those interested in furthering and sharing their knowledge of wine. There is no session fee but members take turns to conduct sessions which may include wine regions other countries, exploring a particular variety or arranging for a wine expert to present the session. Members provide the wines for their session.

The first part of this course was held in 2024, and we now continue to the end of the conflict. Using documentary footage, the course covers the events from 1916 and the battles of Verdun and The Somme, to peace in 1918, and the legacy of the war.  We do not break for school holidays.
